The city always broke your heart, you said
Like each time a stiletto slipped into a metal grating
Someone took a stab at your chest.
And the early nightfall somehow made
You feel right at home with your heavy mood.
The cold's sharp slaps every time you turned a corner
Reminded you that you were alive
Teased you that you had never really been alive.
The ceaseless flow of crowded sidewalks
Prodded your brain to keep trudging on.
But that's all you were doing.
Just making it by.
Living day to day.
Another bar
Another girl
Another failed star
Another senseless whirl
Until you grew numb to the pace
And cold to the touch
And forgot what it means to be warm.
The city always broke your heart, you said
But I understand
It wasn't that it broke your heart
It's that your heart grew too hard to break.
