Turn off the lights
And shade your face,
Whisper gently in my ear.
I can't hear what you don't say
But too oft feel what you don't know.
I like the dark;
It hides the truth:
The red-pink roses in my cheeks
When double-meanings, secret glances
Casual touches, friendly advances
Confuse the truth with hope and guesses.
No use in thinking. No use in risking
For without the safety of the dark
A friendship casual, too forward on one end
Leaves observers with wild assumptions.
No use in thinking. No use in daring
For with the safety of the dark
A hug is here, a teasing word there
The blushes hid, the glances sly.
And in the safety of the night
Free from prying eyes and minds
Faces hidden, miles apart
Sleepy sighs making honest lies
Saying everything, yet saying nothing
Learning every single thing in friendship
Yet not daring to risk touching more.
But it's here away from all the performing,
That honesty begins to grow.
Here without a face to see,
Now it's your words that make you beautiful.
